ABOUT CHANGI SIMEI TOASTMASTERS

Looking to improve your leadership and communication skills? Nail that presentation? Ignite that career? Win that job interview? We can help you.

We are a self-help organization committed to developing the communication and leadership skills of our members.

Many of our members joined us with little or no experience of public speaking. Indeed, there were a few who suffered from a deep fear of public speaking. Through a structured programme of speaking projects within a highly supportive environment, their speaking skills and self-esteem have improved tremendously.

Chartered in 2002, Changi Simei Toastmasters Club has since grown by leaps and bounds into a vibrant club. In 2010-2011, for the seventh time in her relatively short history, the Club was honoured once again with the President's Distinguished Club Award - the highest recognition from Toastmasters International.

Changi Simei Toastmasters Club is an affiliate of Toastmasters International, a non-profit organisation and world leader in communication and leadership development. Since 1924, more than 4 million people around the world have become more confident speakers and leaders because of their participation in Toastmasters. You too can have these same life-changing benefits.

Our motto is: Fun to Speak, Fun to Lead

TYPICAL PROGRAMME

A regular meeeting usually consists of the following segments: Introductions, Education, Table Topics, Prepared Speeches and Evaluations.

Introduction

Everyone in the audience introduces himself/herself. The Toastmaster for the Day then introduces the programme of the day.

Education

Sometimes we have the opportunity for a special speaker to share on a subject related to public speaking. These sessions are informative, entertaining and of great value even to experienced speakers.

Table topics

Table topics develops impromptu speaking skills. The Table Topics Master selects a theme and invite members of the club to speak on a related topic for a maximum of two minutes. This is a good exercise for learning to think on the spot. Although initially it may appear quite daunting, it becomes easier as you have more practice.

Good impromptu speaking skills are particularly useful in many aspects of life such as meetings. We offer a safe environment in which to develop that skill. Visitors and new members have no obligation to participate in table topics but are more than welcome if they wish to do so.

Prepared Speeches and Evaluations

We typically feature three or four prepared speeches at each meeting. Each speech may last from 5 to 20 minutes. Based on the projects described in the Competent Communication manual, each speech project is designed to facilitate the speaker to work on a particular aspect of public speaking such as ‘Body Language’ or ‘Using Props’. The speeches are then evaluated by more experienced Toastmasters who give the speakers ample affirmation as well as constructive advice on how to improve.
